Power Electronics and Grid Integration Laboratory (Powering)
Operating within the METU Electrical and Electronics Engineering Department's Electrical Machines and Power Electronics Laboratory, the Powering unit has an advanced infrastructure covering both low- and high-power systems.
Housed under one roof, the laboratory carries out electrical measurements, power converter testing and characterization work up to approximately 50 kW. It is equipped with power analyzers, oscilloscopes, and passive, differential and current probes with wide frequency range and low error margins, allowing efficiency, input/output waveforms and power limits to be tested precisely.
On the energy source and load simulation side, the lab has DC power supplies capable of high voltage and current that can mimic the electrical characteristics of solar panels, plus a 30 kW rooftop-type solar power system. This infrastructure allows inverters and converters to be tested under different conditions, validating MPPT algorithms and MPPT inputs.
The laboratory also houses grid integration testing and standard compliance capabilities for systems up to 30 kVA, in line with TS EN 50549-1, TS EN 62116 and TS IEC 61727 standards. A grid simulator (400V, 30kVA) is used to verify grid compatibility, while high-quality thermal cameras and calorimetric measurement devices are used to validate the thermal design of systems.
